Dr Carmen Brown

Dr Carmen Brown is a senior consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology with over 16 years of clinical experience. She is the owner and founder of Magnolia Women’s Health, a private gynaecology clinic based in Essendon.

Dr Brown is originally from Atlanta, Georgia in the United States of America. She moved to New Zealand in 2010 and worked as a senior consultant in several public hospitals on the South Island for almost four years. In 2016 she and her family moved to Melbourne and she has been working publicly at Western, Northern and Djerriwarrh Health Services.

Dr Brown obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Cellular and Molecular Biology at Tulane University in New Orleans. She went on to medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia followed by residency training in obstetrics/gynaecology at St Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Houston, Texas. She became a Board Certified Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians/Gynecologists in 2006. She worked in private practice for several years in Georgia, Arizona and Hawaii. In 2009 She moved to the academic faculty at St. Joseph Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, where she won the Faculty Teaching award her first year on faculty. During her time in New Zealand, Dr Brown became a full fellow of the Royal Australia/New Zealand College of Obstetricians/Gynaecologists and took up teaching again as Senior Clinical Lecturer for University of Otago and Prevocational Supervisor for rotating interns.

Dr Brown has particular clinical interests in colposcopy and management of abnormal pap smears, menopause management and contraceptive counselling and management. She has been trained in minimally invasive gynaecologic surgery methods and will be operating out of John Fawkner Private Hospital.

She is a member of:
-The Australasian Menopause Society; and
-The Australasian Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology
and is a Fellow of:
-The Royal Australia / New Zealand College of Obstetricians/ Gynaecologists; and
-The American Board of Obstetricians /Gynaecologists.

Aside from working in the public system, Dr Brown is also an author of a best-selling book and has a consulting firm where she helps American doctors who are interested in working overseas. She has been a featured guest of a variety of TV interviews, blogs and podcasts.
She believes in a warm, patient-centred and holistic care model and has a particular interest in health literacy and believes in providing the best, evidence-based care with dignity, respect and compassion
