Dr Cope graduated from Medical School at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2001. After working in Cape Town for a number of years, he migrated to Australia and started general surgical training in Sydney before completing his Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgical training in New South Wales.
After becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), Dr Cope completed formal post specialty fellowship training at Guys and St Thomas Hospital in London. After returning from subspecialty training he moved to Newcastle and is the director of the department of Otolaryngology at John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children’s Hospital. He has additional appointments at Belmont Hospital, Maitland Private Hospital, Newcastle Private Hospital, Hunter Valley Private Hospital and Lingard Private Hospital.
Dr Cope’s extended subspecialty training has resulted in a high level of expertise and experience in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, salivary gland pathology and head and neck cancer management. He has a broad interest in adult and paediatric ENT, nose and sinus disease, and ear disease. Dr Cope prides himself on his compassion and empathy, treating all patients like family members and making decisions in consultation with patients.
