Dr Alison Bryant-Smith

Gynaecology

Alison is a consultant gynaecologist, who specialises in advanced laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.

After graduating from medical school at The University of Melbourne, Alison undertook her basic obstetric and gynaecology specialty training at The Royal Women’s Hospital. She then spent three years working at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in London, further refining her surgical skills. While in London, she completed a Master of Surgical Education at Imperial College, focusing on gynaecology trainees’ motivations to undertake laparoscopic simulation training.

Having further developed her interest in keyhole gynaecology surgery while in the UK, Alison completed an advanced laparoscopic gynaecology Fellowship with A/Prof Alan Lam in Sydney, under the auspices of the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery society (AGES). A/Prof Lam is one of Australia’s most highly-regarded gynaecologists, and is recognised both nationally and internationally as an expert in minimally-invasive gynaecological surgery. During her two-year apprenticeship with A/Prof Lam, Alison was involved in the multidisciplinary and surgical care of patients with severe endometriosis and numerous fibroids. In addition, she was able to learn and adopt A/Prof Lam’s surgical techniques when undertaking laparoscopic hysterectomy and laparoscopic myomectomy, amongst other operations.

Reports of Alison’s work and research have been published in various medical journals (both here and overseas), including The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (UK), The British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (UK), and the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology (USA). Her current research projects include exploring a potential biomarker for endometriosis.

When not at John Fawkner, Alison works part-time at both The Northern Hospital (Epping) and The Royal Women’s Hospital (Parkville); she also teaches medical students at The University of Melbourne. She loves running, and spending time with her husband and two young children. She looks forward to offering the surgical skills gained in London and Sydney to patients in her hometown.
