Dr George Ostapowicz is a Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Endoscopist. George is Co-director of the Gold Coast Centre for Digestive Diseases.
George graduated from the University of Newcastle, NSW, Medical School in 1987. He then worked at the Royal Newcastle and John Hunter Hospitals, completing his training in 1994. From 1995-1998, he undertook a research fellowship studying hepatitis C at St Vincent’s Hospital and the University of Melbourne Victoria. During this period he continued clinical work at both St Vincent’s and the Epworth Hospitals. Between 1998 and 2001, George completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, USA. While in Dallas he also worked at Parkland Hospital and the VA Medical Center.
After returning to Australia in February 2001, George was appointed as a staff specialist at Gold Coast Hospital, then Gold Coast University Hospital. He was Director of Gastroenterology and Hepatology between 2004 and July 2015. George is an Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at Bond University, School of Medicine.
George joined the Gold Coast Centre for Digestive Diseases in September 2015 on the retirement of Dr David Robinson, co-founder of the Centre.
While his particular interest and expertise is in liver diseases, George continues to practice in all areas of Gastroenterology. In addition to Brockway House, he consults regularly at Tweed Day Surgery. He performs endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) at Pindara Day Procedure Centre, Pacific Private Day Surgery, Gold Coast Private Hospital, Tweed Day Surgery and is a Visiting Medical Officer at Pindara Private and Gold Coast Private Hospitals.
