Having grown up and being schooled on the Gold Coast, it was always Dr Webber's intention to return home and practice in the South-East corner. After completing an Undergraduate Medical Degree at the University of New South Wales in 2001, Dr Webber completed his Basic Surgical Training through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons at various Hospitals including the Gold Coast and Toowoomba Base Hospitals. Having been exposed to all surgical disciplines, Dr Webber's interests lie in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
He was subsequently accepted onto the Queensland Oral and Maxillofacial Training Program where he undertook 7 years of Advanced Surgical Training which included completing a Dental Degree through the University of Queensland. He has undertaken his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Training at The Princess Alexandria Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital and The Mater Adults and Children's Hospitals and was awarded his Specialty Fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery - FRACDS(OMS), in 2010.
In 2009, Dr Webber became the first Australian to train at the World-renowned Oral and Maxillofacial Department at the University of Maryland Medical Centre and The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Centre in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He spent 12 months working alongside World Authorities in numerous disciplines of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He gained extensive experience in all aspects of Maxillofacial Surgery, particularly concentrating and consolidating his skills in Facial Trauma Reconstruction, Orthognathic (Corrective Jaw) Surgery, Open and minimally invasive and all aspects of Dento-alveolar, Dental Implant Surgery and associated soft tissue and bone augmentation and grafting procedures. These areas are now where his interests lie.
In 2015, Dr Webber was awarded a highly prestigious Winston Churchill Fellowship to learn a surgical procedure known as Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis. The surgical procedure was performed late in 2016 and was the first of its kind performed in the Southern Hemisphere. Dr Webber and his ophthalmology colleagues have now successfully given multiple Australians who are blind, secondary to corneal scarring, their vision back. He has been appointed an Honorary Surgeon at the Sydney Eye hospital where he carries out this work.
He has presented at Local, State and International Meetings and is actively involved in research. Dr Webber was a Visiting Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon to the Gold Coast University Hospital for over a decade. He was the Supervisor of Training and enjoyed passing on his knowledge and surgical expertise to Medical and Dental students, Local Practitioners and future Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
He also treats facial injuries associated with elite athletes and the Gold Coast's professional sports teams. Dr Webber has been kept particularly busy over the last few years, courtesy of Covid and the visiting NRL and AFL teams being based on the Gold Coast.
Dr Shannon Webber practices privately at both ends of the Gold Coast (Pindara Hospital and Tweed Day Surgery), thus providing a comprehensive service to the entire Gold Coast and Greater Northern Rivers Region.
