Thomas studied medicine in London at Guys and St Thomas’ medical school, graduating in 2001. He first came to Western Australia in 2002, where he met his wife Lara. He returned to the UK to complete basic surgical training and completed his Orthopaedic surgical training based at the world-renowned Exeter hospital, achieving Fellowship of the Royal College of surgeons of England in 2011. During his orthopaedic training Thomas also studied for a Masters degree in Orthopaedic Engineering. His thesis investigated the use of stems in revision knee replacement and has led to an ongoing interest in orthopaedic implant design and research.
Thomas returned to Australia in 2011 to complete fellowships at Perth Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Centre and Royal Perth Hospital. Thomas has published a number of articles in peer reviewed journals and authored book chapters on peri-prosthetic fractures and cartilage grafting. Thomas completed Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2015.
