Associate Professor Andrew Cochrane has 30 years of experience in Cardiothoracic surgery. He has worked as a consultant surgeon at Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane (1993-1995), at the Royal Children’s Hospital from 1995 to 2008, and then at Monash Medical Centre(2008 – 2022) as Associate Professor in the Dept. of Surgery.
He has a number of research interests, regularly supervising student or Masters research projects. He is a co-author of 140 peer-reviewed journal articles, an editor for the journals Heart Lung & Circulation and the ANZ Journal of Surgery, and reviewer for several other international journals.
He has done a Master of Public Health (majoring in Health Economics / Economic Evaluation) and Master of Epidemiology at the University of Melbourne, and completed a dual MBA / Master of Health Services Mgt through Monash University in 2014.
He is actively involved in many committees of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and was Chair of the Victorian State Committee of the College for 2006-2008, during which time the Victorian Audit of Surgical Mortality (VASM) was established. He has been Deputy Chair of the Cardiothoracic Board. He is on the RACS Council as the elected Cardiothoracic representative.
Andrew has been involved in many charitable cardiac teams and other medical groups over the last two decades, with a total of over 30 trips to diverse areas including the Pacific islands, East Timor, Myanmar, South America and Sri Lanka.
He was for 15 year a board member of Maluk Timor, an NGO involved in primary health care in East Timor, and was previously a board member of the East Timor Hearts organization (2014-2018). He is current Deputy chair of AUSLAMAT (Australia Sri Lanka Medical Aid Team).
He received the Order of Australia (AM) in 2012 for his services to surgery, in particular involving his charitable overseas work.
