Dr Billy Tong is a consultant haematologist with dual specialist training in clinical and laboratory haematology and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of Australasia (FRACP) and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA).
He provides care for patients with a broad range of benign and malignant blood disorders, with particular subspecialty interests in acute and chronic leukaemias, myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders, haemostasis and thrombosis, and transfusion medicine. He also has a strong interest in the investigation and management of complex cytopenias and coagulation abnormalities, especially where detailed laboratory interpretation is critical.
Dr Tong’s dual clinical–laboratory background allows him to integrate blood film review, bone marrow examination, coagulation studies, and specialised haematological testing into everyday clinical decision-making. This allows him to take a thorough and integrated approach, ensuring investigations are clearly explained and management plans are tailored to each individual.
He completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy at The University of Queensland prior to his medical degree at The University of Queensland, graduating in 2011. His grounding in pharmacology underpins a careful and considered approach to therapies such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, anticoagulation, and haemostatic treatments.
Dr Tong has a strong commitment to medical education and enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students and junior doctors. He has held academic teaching appointments with Griffith University and Bond University, and values clear, practical teaching that supports both learning and patient care.
He is dedicated to providing compassionate, patient-centred care, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and referring clinicians to ensure patients feel informed, supported, and actively involved in their care
