Dr Ameya Kamat is a Neurosurgeon specialising in endoscopic spinal surgery and the surgical treatment of conditions involving the brain, spine and peripheral nerves. His innovative approach aims to avoid surgery whenever possible. As a first line measure, lifestyle modifications and non-operative treatments are always explored. However, if all alternatives are exhausted, a combination of minimally invasive and traditional open options will be available based on the patient's unique needs.
In 2019, he received the Fellowship in Neurosurgery from the College of Neurosurgeons followed by the degree of Masters in Medicine (Neurosurgery),cum laude, in Cape Town, South Africa.
With a special interest in Spine, he then went on to complete a Complex Spine Fellowship at Macquarie University Hospital, Sydney, with some of Australia's most respected spine surgeons.
Wanting to make Australia his permanent home; in 2023 he was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Kamat is an accomplished Neurosurgeon who has published numerous clinical and scientific papers in peer-reviewed medical journals and has presented on key Neurosurgical topics at global meetings amongst peers.
He has worked as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Royal Darwin Hospital, since 2020 and has enjoyed his time in the Top End. He has also been appointed as a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago, Wellington and presently at Flinders University NT.
When not in the operating theatre, Dr Kamat enjoys travel, especially exploring Australia, enjoying good food and spending quality time with his young family.
Dr Kamat travels to Darwin to consult patients every 8 weeks.
