Dr Anthony Cheng is a General and Bariatric Surgeon. He has 20 years experience in laparoscopic (key-hole) gallbladder surgery, anti-reflux surgery, hiatal hernia repair, ventral and groin hernia repairs. He is one of the few experts in Brisbane who offers laparoscopic cholecystectomy and exploration of common bile duct, a one-staged key-hole procedure to remove gallstones in the gallbladder and in the common bile duct at the same time, saving patients to undergo additional procedures for residual gallstones disease.
Dr Cheng has particular expertise in Bariatric surgery. He offers the full spectrum of bariatric surgery options including laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, minigastric bypass and robotic bariatric procedures. He performed the first total robotic sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Queensland. He also provides endoscopic treatments to bariatric patients. And In view of the growing problems of Lapband complications in the community, he has developed a particular expertise in the management of Lapband complications and complex revision bariatric procedures.
Dr Cheng is a Gastoenterological Society of Australia (GESA) accredited endoscopist experienced in gastroscopy and colonoscopy. He has an open access endoscopy list in Sunnybank Private Hospital for eligible referrals from General Practitioners.
Dr Cheng underwent surgical training in Melbourne and qualified as a General Surgeon in 2010. He then completed Post-Fellowship Training in Hepatobiliary and Bariatric surgery. His training included an overseas scholarship in the United Kingdom at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and an Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Currently Dr Cheng is a Senior Lecturer of the University of Queensland and an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. Dr Cheng consults and operates at the Sunnybank Private Hospital. He also has additional consulting sessions at the Mater Medical Centre. Besides English, Dr Cheng is fluent in Mandarin & Cantonese.
