Dr Anthony Cheng is a General and Bariatric Surgeon with over 20 years experience. He is one of the few experts in Brisbane who offers laparoscopic cholecystectomy and exploration of common bile duct, a one-staged key-hole procedure to remove gallstones in the gallbladder and in the common bile duct at the same time, saving the need for additional procedures for residual gallstones disease.
Dr Cheng has particular expertise in bariatric surgery. He offers the full spectrum of bariatric surgery options including:
laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy,
roux-en-Y gastric bypass,
mini-gastric bypass, and
robotic bariatric procedures.
He performed the first total robotic sleeve gastrectomy and roux-en-Y gastric bypass in Queensland. He also provides endoscopic treatments to bariatric patients. In view of the growing problems of lapband complications in the community, he has developed a particular expertise in the management of lapband complications and complex revision bariatric procedures.

Dr Cheng underwent surgical training in Melbourne and qualified as a General Surgeon in 2010. He then completed Post-Fellowship Training in Hepatobiliary and Bariatric surgery. His training included an overseas scholarship in the United Kingdom at the prestigious Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and an Advanced Laparoscopic Fellowship at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Currently Dr Cheng is a Senior Lecturer of the University of Queensland and an examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
