Dr Schwarzer is a Rheumatologist and Pain Physician. He has a particular interest in mechanical and inflammatory spinal pain. For some years he was an academic at Royal North Shore Hospital and The University of Sydney and then at The University of Newcastle having completed his PhD on the investigation of back pain using radiological procedures under Professor Nikolai Bogduk.
He has published extensively in peer reviewed journals in Rheumatology, Pain and Spine Medicine. He has presented to many international meetings in the US, Europe and Australia. He was the convenor of three international meetings in Sydney, Hawaii and New York. He is a past President of the Spine Intervention Society (previously called the International Spine Intervention Society) and the Australasian Faculty of Musculoskeletal Medicine.
He remains an active member of the Research Division of the Spine Intervention Society reviewing submissions for scientific meetings and grant applications.
Dr Schwarzer has a broad rheumatological and pain practice including:
Management of spinal pain
Management of peripheral joint arthritis, inflammatory and
non inflammatory
Use of x-ray guided procedures in the spine and peripheral joints
Radiofrequency neurotomy of the cervical, thoracic and
lumbar spine
Radiofrequency neurotomy of the shoulder, hip and knee
Rational use of pharmacological interventions
Management of chronic pain using a multidisciplinary approach.
