Dr Ashutosh Hardikar is a Cardiothoracic Surgeon located at the Royal Hobart Hospital where he is also the Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Staff Specialist. He has a special interest in aortic surgery, bicuspid aortic valves, adult congenital surgery, and thoracic surgical work.
He qualified as a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon in India in 1996, and after working as a lecturer in Mumbai, he came to Adelaide as a Fellow in CT surgery for 3 years. He returned to India and set up a unit at Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune where he worked till 2008. He moved to Hobart in March 2008 and has lead the unit there since 2015. He helped set up another unit at Calvary Hospitals, Lenah Valley Campus.
Additionally, Dr Hardikar is currently working as a PhD student under the supervision of Professor Thomas Marwick at the University of Tasmania and Menzies research institute, focusing on the study of bicuspid aortic valves and associated aortic pathology.
Dr Hardikar established a Tasmanian registry of bicuspid aortic valves (BAV) and aortic pathology in Tasmania and has been responsible for all the data collection and maintenance so far. The registry is a part of BAV-CON, a consortium of worldwide registries.
He is an active member of the cardiothoracic community and continues to further his clinical skills in various workshops and training, including a minimally invasive MIDCAB surgery workshop (Mumbai), VATS training course (New Delhi), minimally invasive mitral surgery workshop (Leipzig), and Uniportal VATS workshop and training (Shanghai).
Dr Hardikar works as a reviewer for The Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart, Lung and Circulation, and Heart: BMJ Publications. He is has worked as an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Tasmania since 2009.
