Dr Gunawardene is a Consultant Physician and Geriatrician. She completed her internship at Concord Hospital in 2004 and subsequently trained in Geriatric Medicine at Nepean and Blacktown Hospitals. She was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2012. Dr Gunawardene completed her PhD at The University of Sydney in 2020.
Dr Gunawardene has admitting rights to Norwest Private and Nepean Private Hospitals. She is involved in teaching medical student at The University of Sydney.
