Dr Akshara Shyamsunder

Dr Akshara Shyamsunder is an advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgeon, holding the highest level of accreditation (RANZCOG/AGES Level 6) in laparoscopic gynaecological surgery in Australia & New Zealand. She completed her core specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at The Royal Hospital for Women. Through her core training, she has completed a Masters in Reproductive Medicine (MRMed) through the University of New South Wales (UNSW). During this time, she developed a passion for minimally invasive gynaecological surgery and underwent a two-year fellowship in laparoscopic gynaecology completed under the tutelage of Professor Jason Abbott & A/Professor Erin Nesbitt-Hawes and accredited by the Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery (AGES) Society. 

Akshara consults at Alana Healthcare in Kensington and is a consultant at The Royal Hospital for Women where she works as a clinician, surgeon, educator and researcher. She is a conjoint associate lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and is actively involved in teaching UNSW medical students as well as training future gynaecologists.  

Akshara is an active member of AGES and currently serves as trainee representative on the AGES Board to promote the safest and highest standards of clinical and minimally invasive surgical care for women throughout Australia & New Zealand. With a strong research focus, Akshara has been actively involved in multiple research publications, contributed to a number of manuscripts and is a reviewer for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynaecology (JMIG). Passionate about surgical education, Akshara facilitates regular laparoscopic and hysteroscopic workshops at a national level to teach, train and educate the next generation of minimally invasive surgeons.  

Whether guiding a patient through their first gynaecological concern or managing complex surgical cases, Akshara is a strong believer in actively listening to her patients and providing evidence-based advice so they feel empowered to make informed decisions about their health. She understands that surgery is not the solution for everyone & her training & expertise means she can offer high level care in a supportive environment with considerable choice over a broad range of treatments.
