Dr Barry Renner

Dr Barry Renner is a Consultant Psychiatrist with a specialist focus in addiction psychiatry. He provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care for adults experiencing alcohol and substance use disorders, dual diagnosis, and complex co-occurring mental health conditions.

Before studying medicine, Dr Renner worked as a registered nurse across acute hospital, addiction, and harm minimisation settings, including opioid treatment services and the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre. This background informs his practical, compassionate, and non-judgemental approach to working with people affected by substance use.

Dr Renner completed medical training at the University of Sydney and psychiatry training across Sydney Local Health District and Northern Sydney Local Health District, including advanced training in addiction psychiatry. His clinical experience spans inpatient drug and alcohol services, opioid treatment programs, consultation-liaison psychiatry, pain clinic settings, acute adult psychiatry, community mental health, and work with marginalised populations affected by substance use.

Dr Renner works collaboratively with GPs, psychologists, allied health clinicians, and multidisciplinary treating teams. His approach is person-centred, pragmatic, evidence-informed, and recovery-focused, with an emphasis on careful assessment, tailored treatment planning, relapse prevention, continuity of care, and sustainable long-term change.

He takes a holistic view of recovery, considering biological, psychological, social, behavioural, lifestyle, and relational factors in each patient’s care.
