Dr Brendan Backhouse is a general and interventional cardiologist. After graduating with Honours from Melbourne University Medical School in 2016, he completed his physician training at The Alfred Hospital. He subsequently undertook specialist cardiology training at Box Hill, The Alfred, and Victorian Heart Hospitals.
Brendan completed his interventional fellowship at Western Health, where he gained extensive experience in managing complex coronary artery disease. In addition to general cardiology issues and coronary artery disease, he has a particular interest in the management of chest pain due to coronary artery spasms and microvascular dysfunction.
Dr Backhouse is currently undertaking his PhD through the University of Melbourne, focusing on improving outcomes in patients with cardiac arrest and cardiogenic shock. For this, he has been awarded the prestigious National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) postgraduate research scholarship.
Dr Backhouse currently holds appointments at The Alfred Hospital and Western Health.
Outside of his medical and research work, he is a father of two young children. He enjoys exercising, cooking and all things sport.
