Dr Hye-Sang Shin is a consultant psychiatrist committed to providing calm, reflective, and respectful therapeutic spaces for older adults and the families who care for them. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP) and holds a Certificate of Advanced Training in Psychiatry of Old Age.
Dr Shin works in public roles at Sunshine and Alfred Hospitals, with experience in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric conditions in later life, including mood and anxiety disorders, psychosis, dementia-related behavioural and psychological symptoms, and complex comorbid medical illness.
In private practice, she has a particular interest in the emotional, psychological, and relational impact of caring for an older person, recognising carer burden as a major and often under-addressed contributor to distress and burnout. Her approach is collaborative, thoughtful, and psychotherapy-informed.
Dr Shin works closely with carers and families to explore grief, role changes, guilt, conflict, and exhaustion that can arise in the context of chronic illness, cognitive decline, and ageing. She integrates psychodynamic and supportive psychotherapy with evidence-based psychiatric care to support both symptom relief and deeper understanding of patients’ and carers’ experiences.
Dr Shin completed her medical degree with honours at Monash University and a Master of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne. She remains actively involved in teaching, supervision, and professional leadership, and undertakes ongoing study in psychodynamic practice.
