Dr Kai Hellberg is a highly experienced general, trauma, and laparoscopic surgeon with public appointments at Fiona Stanley Hospital, Fremantle Hospital, and the Rockingham Hospital Group, including Peel Health Campus. He also provides care in Broome with WACHS servicing the Kimberley region in Western Australia.
Before moving to Australia, Dr Hellberg worked for the German government agency GIZ in Blantyre, Malawi, where he served as a general surgeon at the teaching hospital QECH and lecturer at the University of Malawi from 2007 to 2011. From 2000 to 2007, Dr Hellberg trained in general and trauma surgery at several prestigious teaching hospitals in and around Cologne, Germany, and completed an 18-month training program in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Originally from Germany, Dr Hellberg has been practicing in Western Australia since 2011. He has provided surgical care for five hospitals in the Kimberley region, primarily out of Broome, where he served as the clinical lead surgeon from 2017 to 2021. Additionally, he has been working regularly at Fremantle Hospital since 2011, providing acute surgical care. In 2015, acute surgical services transitioned to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where Dr Hellberg was involved from the beginning.
Dr Hellberg opened his private practice in 2022 and is accepting new referrals. He sees patients at his private rooms in Murdoch (Murdoch Square) including those under the Workers Compensation Scheme.
Dr Hellberg maintains public appointments for both emergency and elective surgical services at these major hospitals. In 2021, following his son’s transition to high school in Perth, Dr Hellberg settled in the southern metropolitan area and now works at hospitals across the south metro region and Mount Private Hospital.
