Dr Leon Foster

Dr Leon Foster is a certified gynaecological oncologist (CGO) specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of cancerous, precancerous and complex benign gynaecological conditions. His surgical techniques include laparoscopic, robotic, and open surgeries. He offers private consultations in Deakin and performs surgeries at National Capital Private Hospital, Calvary John James Hospital and Calvary Private Hospital Bruce. Dr Foster is the only gynaecological oncologist who provides appointments and surgery through the ACT public system. 

Leon is almost a Canberra local. After training at the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College Duntroon he served in Australian Army units around Australia. He returned to the ACT to undertake his medical training at the Australian National University and subsequently worked as a junior medical officer at Canberra and Calvary Hospitals.

During his general obstetrics and gynaecology training he trained at The Canberra Hospital, Calvary Belconnen, Caboolture Queensland, and Wagga Wagga. It was during this time that he was awarded the Matthew Davey Award as the most outstanding junior medical officer in the ACT. An award based on the hard work of the team of junior doctors that he worked with.

After completing his fellowship in obstetrics and gynaecology, he went on to complete further subspecialty training in the surgical management of gynaecological cancers. He could see that there was a need for the ACT region to have a resident gynaecological cancer surgical unit. He completed this subspecialty training under the team at Westmead Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney. During the final year of training at the Royal Hospital for Women in Randwick he worked with the fly in fly out service to Canberra.

In 2024 Leon was awarded the RANZCOG Early Career Fellow Award in recognition of his significant contributions to Women’s Health through his remarkable dedication and perseverance in establishing the first local Gynaecology Oncology Service in Canberra. 

Dr Foster understands the importance of taking the time to make sure his patients understand what is going on and providing them with the time they need. He understands that humans are complicated and tries to understand that their medical journey includes their family, social, psychological, and spiritual health as well.
