Dr Michael O'Brien is an Orthopaedic Surgeon at Victorian Bone and Joint Specialists. Michael brings expertise in hip, knee, and trauma surgery to patients in Melbourne and Victoria. Specialising in advanced techniques, Michael incorporates cutting-edge robotic and computer-assisted methods for hip and knee replacements. Additionally, he employs a diverse range of innovative techniques to address soft tissue injuries in the knee, including ligament, meniscus, or cartilage damage.
Born and raised in Melbourne, Michael underwent rigorous training in Orthopaedic surgery through the Australian Orthopaedic Association's Victorian training program. His training spanned both urban and rural Victoria, providing him with comprehensive experience across all aspects of Orthopaedic Surgery. Following his training, Michael served as a Trauma Consultant at the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg for a year, where he honed his skills in managing fractures of the upper and lower limbs in adults and children.
To further enhance his expertise, Michael pursued overseas fellowships with renowned leaders in the field of joint replacements. He completed a fellowship in Robotic Joint Replacement Surgery at the prestigious Golden Jubilee National Hospital in the UK, known for its high volume of robotic surgeries and partial knee replacements. Subsequently, he underwent a fellowship in Knee Surgery at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre at the North Bristol NHS Trust, focusing on soft tissue injuries and degenerative conditions of the knee.
In addition to his private practice at Victorian Bone and Joint Specialists, Michael maintains a public practice at Austin Health in Heidelberg, where he is dedicated to training and mentoring registrars, junior doctors, and medical students, ensuring the continued advancement of orthopaedic care.
