Dr Richard Allom is an experienced Orthopaedic Surgeon with a subspecialist interest in surgery of the knee. He holds Specialist Registration in Australia and the United Kingdom, as well as Fellowships of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Dr Allom graduated from the University of London with a First Class Bachelor of Sciences degree with Honours and a double distinction in his medical degree, as well as numerous prizes. Dr Allom undertook Basic Surgical Training then Advanced Surgical Training in Orthopaedics in London, with the later based at the prestigious Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals. During this period, he read for a Master’s Degree in Surgery and was awarded a Distinction for his thesis, which considered haemostasis during knee arthroplasty.
It was during a training Fellowship in Trauma at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney that Dr Allom fell in love with Australia and its people. Upon his return to Europe, he held Consultant posts at King’s College Hospital in London and a rural general hospital. After returning to Australia, he completed Fellowships in soft tissue knee surgery, lower limb arthroplasty and trauma surgery, working closely with internationally renowned experts.
Dr Allom has long held an interest in research. His first peer-reviewed article, which discussed the construction and application of a probabilistic anatomical brain atlas, was published when he was an undergraduate. Dr Allom has an ongoing commitment to evidence-based practice, and he has continued to publish throughout his career. His research has spanned the breadth of orthopaedics, including basic science, surgical technique, patient-reported outcomes and, most-recently, alternative alignment strategies and the application of robotics in total knee arthroplasty.
Dr Allom is invested in future generations of doctors and surgeons. He has been invited faculty at higher surgical training courses and an OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) examiner for medical students at both the University of London and Western Sydney University. He mentors, teaches and examines orthopaedic surgical trainees.
