Dr Farmer is a vascular and endovascular surgeon. He is the Head of Vascular Surgery at St George (Public) Hospital.
He studied undergraduate medicine and surgery at the University of New South Wales, graduating in 1977. After completing his internship and residency at Prince of Wales Hospital, he trained as a surgeon at St George (Public) Hospital. His overseas training in Britain included vascular and transplantation surgery.
Dr Farmer was appointed as a vascular surgeon to the Liverpool Teaching Hospital in 1986 and appointed as the Clinical Superintendent in Surgery at St George (Public) Hospital, also in that year. He has continued his appointment at Liverpool Hospital and, after a long absence from St George Hospital, returned as a VMO in vascular and endovascular surgery in 2008. He also has appointments at The Sutherland Hospital, St George Private Hospital, Sydney South West Private Hospital and is a consultant in vascular surgery at Fairfield and Campbelltown Hospitals
Dr Farmer is the principal in the Liverpool and Campbelltown Vascular Laboratories as well as a joint principal in the St George Vascular Laboratory.
Dr Farmer is a member of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Vascular Surgery, the International Society for Vascular Surgery, European Society for Vascular Surgery and the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine. He is accredited by the Con-Joint Committee for Endovascular Intervention for all endovascular procedures, including carotid stenting.
His main interests include thoracic and aortic aneurysm surgery and endovascular repair, peripheral endovascular intervention, including carotid stenting, and endovenous therapy including laser ablation. He has a keen interest in non-invasive vascular investigations.
