Professor Gary Sholler AM is a paediatric and fetal cardiologist who has extensive experience in the care of patients and families affected by childhood heart disease, including congenital heart disease. He combines consulting skills and treatment planning with expert echocardiography (heart ultrasound, including fetal heart imaging when needed) and interpretation of cardiac investigations. He was a Fulbright Scholar and Medical Foundation Scholar of the University of Sydney, working at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, and has developed and previously led the major Children's Cardiac Service in NSW.
Professor Sholler believes an important consideration in patient care is understanding how challenging the possibility of heart disease can be for families, including the wider impacts outside immediate medical issues. Longstanding, expert advice can improve the understanding of the situation for parents and carers, allowing guidance to the best support resources when needed. He is actively involved in research, publishing over 100 co authored papers, including over 25 in the past 5 years. He has been recognised through the award of Member of the Order of Australia.
He is currently the Co-Chair of the Commonwealth sponsored National Standards of Care for Childhood-onset Heart Disease.
