Dr Gerald Yong is an interventional cardiologist with an interest in structural heart disease and obstructive coronary conditions. He is a leading expert in the latest advances in minimally invasive treatment of heart valves or structural diseases (instead of open-heart surgery). These include transcatheter valve replacements, valvuloplasties, and closure of various heart defects (ASD, VSD, PDA) and leaks around prosthetic heart valves. He also has a special interest in complex and high-risk coronary interventions, including chronic total occlusions.
He performed the first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVI, which is the replacement of the aortic heart valve with an artificial valve without open surgery) in Western Australia in 2009. He is frequently asked to proctor and train new operators in Australia and Asia.
Gerald graduated with honours in medicine from the University of Western Australia. He completed general cardiology training and a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Royal Perth Hospital. He then completed super-speciality training in Structural Cardiac Interventions at Evanston Hospital, Chicago and at the Montreal Heart Institute, Canada. He has been involved in numerous national and international research studies, particularly in TAVI and structural heart disease. He is widely published and has been an invited faculty member and presenter in many international meetings.
Gerald is a consultant interventional cardiologist at Fiona Stanley Hospital (FSH) and Mount Private Hospital. He is the head of the Structural Heart and Valve Intervention Programme at FSH. He participates in the on-call roster for general cardiology and acute angioplasty at FSH.
Dr Yong combines his keen interest in the development of cardiac prostheses and non-surgical solutions with a strong sense of duty toward the public health system. He combines his expertise in cardiac intervention, always intending to optimise the medical management of all his patients. He prioritises patient access, ensuring minimal delays in assessment and review.
