Prof Golo Ahlenstiel

Dr Ahlenstiel is a clinical gastroenterologist and hepatologist. With significant leadership roles throughout Western Sydney, he is a Director for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy in WSLHD, as well as Head of Department for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Blacktown-Mount Druitt Hospital.

Dr Ahlenstiel graduated and received his doctorate from the University of Bonn, Germany. He subsequently undertook a Liver Fellowship at the world-renowned National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, DC in the United States. He is Chair of Medicine at Blacktown Clinical School with active research into metabolic liver disease, chronic inflammation of liver and gut, coeliac disease and new ways of treating liver disease. This is recognized by over 100 publications and 8,000 citations of his work.

He currently leads the Liver Immunology group at Storr Liver Centre and is Faculty at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research. He also serves as on the national GESA Liver Executive and the GESA Research & Grants committee chair to two national consensus statements in liver disease. For his work he was recently awarded Fellow of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia (FGESA).

Dr Ahlenstiel’s practice encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease with a particular interest in bowel cancer screening, iron deficiency including pill cam, and chronic liver disease including fatty liver disease, rare liver diseases and liver cancer.
