Dr Hema Karthik is a comprehensive eye surgeon with over 18 years of experience in Ophthalmology. She is a general Ophthalmologist with a particular interest in Cataract Surgery, Medical Retina, Oculoplastics and MIGS (Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery). She is a Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO) since 2013.
Dr Hema Karthik completed her ophthalmology specialist training (Master of Surgery, M.S Ophthal) in 2005 from the prestigious Regional Institute of Ophthalmology and Government Ophthalmic Hospital (RIO GOH), in Chennai, India. She studied undergraduate medicine in another historical institute, Madras Medical College, Chennai, India and obtained MBBS in 2001.
She moved to Australia in 2006 and made Darwin her home. She completed a Fellowship in Medical Retina and Oculoplastics in 2016 in Brisbane through The Mater Health Services and Queensland Eye Institute. She recently also obtained certification for iStent implantation (MIGS).
Dr Hema Karthik is a consultant staff specialist at Royal Darwin Hospital, Top End Health Service and is also involved in providing ophthalmic care to Katherine, Gove and remote communities through the Outreach program. She is a term supervisor for Ophthalmology trainees rostered through the NSW Vocational Training Program of RANZCO. She is passionately involved in teaching activities for medical students through the Flinders NT Medical Program, and Optometry and Orthoptist students through the Royal Darwin Hospital.
Dr Hema Karthik provides surgical services at Darwin Private Hospital, where she performs cataract, pterygium, MIGS, Oculoplastic and other surgeries.
