Dr Irena Nikakis

Irena is a specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in fertility.  She known for her warm, caring nature and holistic approach to patient care. She is the owner and Medical Director of Fertility Tasmania, providing Tasmanians access to advanced IVF and fertility services as well as general gynaecology and obstetric services

Born in Greece but raised in Tasmania, Irena graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Tasmania, Followed by a Master of Forensic Science at the University of London. She worked in a number of medical laboratories both in London and Greece before returning to Hobart.  Thereafter she worked for the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as their Scientific Officer and Quality Control Manager.

Irena then completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with Honours at the University of Tasmania in 2004. She is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a Staff Specialist at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Irena is committed to providing information and support pre conception as well as during early pregnancy and beyond. She is keenly interested in using evidence based medicine to tailor treatment to suit each individual’s or couple’s unique fertility issues. She often supports patients with difficulty conceiving due to health factors or age. Her special focus is in recurrent miscarriage and implantation failure and how to minimise the impact of fertility treatment to improve pregnancy outcomes. Other areas of interest include fertility preservation, Endometriosis and PCOS as they impact fertility.

Irena firmly believes that taking time to work through issues is the cornerstone to her success but mostly as a mother of four she is humbled to be part of her patients journey to parenthood.
