Dr Stewart graduated from Sydney University Medical school, earning the Mabel Elizabeth Laever Memorial Prize for Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She completed her RACS general surgical Fellowship at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.  During her time at RPAH she was awarded the RACS Noel Newton Medal for excellence in research.

Dr Stewart undertook further training in breast and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery at RPAH and with the University of Sydney Medical School Professorial Unit before accepting a position at Harbor/UCLA Medical Centre, Los Angeles as team leader of breast cancer services, managing over 300 cases each year and involved in multinational research projects.

On return to Australia, Dr Stewart was awarded a prestigious NH&MRC scholarship to complete a PhD in Breast Cancer Genetics at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

After completing her PhD, Dr Stewart was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgery in the Professorial Unit at Nepean Hospital, then accepted the position of VMO in General/Breast Surgery created at Campbelltown Hospital to modernise and expand breast cancer services in the Macarthur area.

Accepting the challenge with enthusiasm, Dr Stewart convened the Macarthur Multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Team and initially chaired their meetings. She was involved with implementation of screening mammography services and was the first surgeon from Macarthur to be appointed as a VMO with BreastScreen NSW.

Dr Stewart introduced modern breast cancer surgery techniques to Macarthur, including Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy, hookwire localisation techniques and modern breast reconstruction. Undertaking further study at Sydney University, Dr Stewart completed her Graduate Diploma in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in 2019.
