Dr Martin Hanson is an Otolaryngology Head & Neck surgeon with advanced training and a particular clinical interest in Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery, Head & Neck Cancer Surgery, and Facial Plastic Surgery (particularly in rhinoplasty and in optimizing aesthetic outcomes for cancer patients). He is one of a select group of Australian surgeons to be dually trained in the USA, having completed accredited fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (Thyroid and Head & Neck Cancer) and the University of Virginia (Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery).
After successfully completing his Otolaryngology training in QLD and being awarded his Fellowship from the RACS, Dr Hanson journeyed with his young family to the US to pursue further training. He had the honour of being the first Australian ENT surgeon to be awarded a clinical fellowship post at the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York, the cradle of modern Head & Neck Cancer and Thyroid Surgery. Whilst at MSK, Marty was exposed to world-first treatment protocols as part of his daily clinical practice and performed clinical research focused on thyroid, salivary disease and anterior skull base (pituitary) surgery. He was in the first cohort of surgeons to be certified in the Trans-Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) Fellowship training program conducted by the American Head & Neck Society.
Following his time in New York, Dr Hanson undertook a clinical fellowship in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at the historic University of Virginia. Here Marty refined clinical & technical expertise with world leaders in total nasal reconstruction (for malignancy, trauma & nasal obstruction/OSA), cosmetic rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty and the resection and reconstruction of complex cutaneous malignancies of the face, nose, ears, eyelids and neck. He is one of two surgeons in Queensland to receive formal training in the performance of deep-plane facelifts (rhytidectomy). At the conclusion of his training Marty was offered a faculty position at UVA and worked as an Attending Surgeon in the Division of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Dr Hanson has presented clinical research at international academic meetings and conferences and been invited to demonstrate surgical techniques at national training courses. He has published numerous peer-reviewed papers with luminaries of the academic literature and also authored multiple textbook chapters about thyroid cancer and different operative techniques in Head & Neck Surgery.
Born and raised in Brisbane, Marty attended the University of Queensland. Here he was awarded undergraduate degrees in Science (Biomedical) and Business Management (Real Estate & Development) before completing his postgraduate Medical degree. Marty currently is completing a Masters focusing on cutaneous malignancies, while helping raise three small children and contending with his wife’s ongoing desire to have many more.
Marty is committed to providing his patients with optimal treatments while also focusing on maximizing their quality of life. Marty believes that surgeons need to be sensitive to all issues affecting their patients and wishes to be seen as someone who cares about his patients and their families as people.
