A/Prof Michael Gabbett

Dr Michael Gabbett is one of Australia’s leading clinical geneticists having practised in medical genetics for over two decades. Michael has experience diagnosing and managing genetic conditions across the entire life spectrum. His expertise includes pregnancy planning, prenatal, paediatric, adult, and cancer genetics. Michael is also an academic, researching rare genetic diseases. He has published widely, including in prestigious medical journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and Nature Genetics.

After originally training in paediatric medicine on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, Michael moved to Sydney where he worked at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, learning genetic medicine from some of Australia’s foremost specialists in clinical genetics. He returned to Brisbane to take up a staff specialist position with Queensland Health, where he worked for over a decade. He now consults privately on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane. In addition, Michael is employed by Queensland University of Technology to co-ordinate the university’s postgraduate degrees in Diagnostic Genomics.

Michael is a Past President of the Australasian Association of Clinical Geneticists. He has served on the Executive and the Council of the Human Genetics Society of Australasia. He is a well-regarded educator, having been a member of the Advanced Training Committee for Clinical Genetics for over ten years. Michael has taught genetics at multiple courses for junior doctors, general practitioners, and nurses.
