Dr Paymard in an Australian-trained consultant cardiologist and Canadian-trained cardiac electrophysiologist (heart rhythm expert). He is a staff specialist at The Canberra Hospital and Calvary Public Hospital. He undertook his internal medicine training at Royal Hobart Hospital and John Hunter Hospital. Subsequently, he worked as a cardiology registrar at The Prince Charles Hospital and The Canberra Hospital where he successfully completed his cardiology speciality training. Dr Paymard is a fellow of Royal Australasian College of Physicians and also a member of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Paymard then moved to Vancouver, Canada where he undertook two-year of advanced cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at the prestigious University of British Columbia. His training was at St Paul’s Hospital which is the largest hospital for treatment of complex heart conditions in western Canada and one of the busiest in North America.
Cardiac electrophysiology is a particular area of cardiology dealing with the electrical problems of the heart including cardiac device implantation and catheter ablation of abnormal rhythms. Dr Paymard performs implantation of permanent pacemakers, loop recorder, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), cardiac re-synchronisation therapy (CRT) devices as well as left bundle branch area pacing. With regard to catheter ablation, Dr Paymard is fully trained to perform standard and complex catheter ablation of arrhythmias including supraventricular tachycardias (SVT), atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, and ventricular tachycardia using both radiofrequency (heat energy) and cryoablation (freezing energy). In addition, Dr Paymard is trained to operate intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) as well as to perform low/zero fluoroscopy catheter ablation of arrhythmias which is very desirable for young patients. Although Dr Paymard is focussed on cardiac electrophysiology, He would be very happy to look after general cardiology patients whom suffer from chest pain, ischemic heart disease, valvular heart disease and heart failure. He also performs exercise stress tests/transesophageal echocardiography and reports transthoracic echocardiography.
Dr Paymard is very keen on conducting clinical research projects. He has published several papers and has presented in major national and international cardiology conferences including Heart Rhythm Society (USA), American College of Cardiology Scientific meetings, and American Heart Association meetings.
During his fellowship in Canada, Dr Paymard was awarded the best abstract Award at Toronto Arrhythmia Congress in 2020.
Dr Paymard enjoys teaching medical students and junior doctors. Before moving to Canada, Dr Paymard was an Associate-Lecturer at the Australian National University. He is currently the clinical supervisor for the basic physician trainees and ANU medical students.
