Owen graduated from medicine at Newcastle University in 2004 and moved to Melbourne in 2006. He completed the Victorian Orthopaedic training in 2016, being accepted as a Fellow into the Royal Australian College of Surgeons and the Australian Orthopaedic Association.

After working as a Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at Box Hill and Sandringham Hospitals he completed further advanced training in 2017 and 2018.

Owen was a fellow with the Sydney Shoulder Research Institute, under the guidance of Mr Ben Cass, Mr Allan Young and Mr Jeff Hughes. He then completed a further Upper Limb fellowship at Wrightington Hospital in the United Kingdom, working with Mr Mike Walton, Prof Len Funk, Prof Adam Watts and Mr Steve Bale.
