A/Prof Paul Harvie

Paul is UK trained Orthopaedic Surgeon holding dual accreditation with the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. After undertaking a Research Doctorate at the Botnar Research Centre, University of Oxford he graduated from the prestigious 6-year Oxford Orthopaedic Training Program. This was followed by three years of super-specialist training in Perth (Australia), Oxford & Bristol focusing on complex primary and revision hip and knee replacement surgery.

Paul came to Hobart in 2014 and maintains a significant public commitment at the Royal Hobart Hospital combined with an academic appointment at the University of Tasmania.

Paul's major surgical interest is MAKO Robotic Hip & Knee Replacement Surgery and treatments aimed at deferring joint replacement such as arthroscopic hip & knee surgery as well as hip & knee radiofrequency ablation. Paul is the only surgeon in Tasmania performing MAKO Robotic Total Hip Replacement using a minimally invasive Direct Anterior Approach incorporating Spino-Pelvic Motion Analysis for optimal component positioning. Paul also performs MAKO Robotic Partial and Total Knee Replacement Surgery. He is also the only surgeon offering radiofrequency ablation of both the hip & knee.

Paul does not work as an individual. In order to optimise patient outcomes and make every patient's surgical journey as smooth as possible Paul works with a Consultant Perioperative Physician (Dr Nadeeshani Fernando). Dr Fernando reviews all surgical patients on a daily basis providing medical expertise and guidance in a patient group who can be elderly with significant comorbidities.

In the last year Paul has relocated his Private Rooms to a state of the art suite within the Hobart CBD with ample nearby parking and easy ground floor patient access. Despite current economic uncertainly and inflationary pressures Paul feels that privately insured patients should not bare further costs in order to access World-Class cutting edge technology and continues his commitment to charge no out of pocket expenses to patients for their surgery.
