Dr Bassily completed his undergraduate medical degree in Alexandria University, Egypt. He worked for three years in Alexandria University hospital where he gained invaluable clinical experience. Following the RACP exam (UK), he migrated to Australia. He was awarded a Masters degree in Medicine before starting his Physician training in Australia.
His Basic Training was undertaken at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. He worked as an Infectious Diseases registrar at Fairfield Hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred Hospital. This allowed him to gain knowledge in HIV medicine, tropical diseases medicine and hospital-based infectious diseases.
He subsequently undertook further advanced training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Austin Hospital, which gave him extensive experience in treating liver diseases, liver transplantation, luminal gastroenterology, emergency and elective endoscopy. He became a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1999.
Dr Raouf Bassily is a Gastroenterologist at The Northern Hospital and works privately in Bundoora. He is a member of the Australian and the American Gastroenterology Associations and speaks French and Arabic fluently.
