Dr Sasanka Handunnetti is a consultant haematologist with vast experience in malignant and non-malignant haematology, having trained and then consulted at Melbourne’s foremost teaching hospitals. She is committed to providing excellent evidence-based, personalised patient care.
Dr Handunnetti obtained her medical degree with Class I Honours from The University of Queenland in 2008 before completing her further training in clinical haematology and haematopathology in 2016. She then honed her expertise in low-grade lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, undertaking a four-year clinical fellowship at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and Royal Melbourne Hospital under the mentorship of Professor Constantine Tam. This fellowship focused particularly on novel clinical trials, molecular prognostics and resistance, and minimal residual disease testing. During this time, she continued to practice high acuity haematology, including caring for patients treated with intensive chemotherapy, CAR-T cells, and autologous transplantation. She is completing a PhD at The University of Melbourne, culminating
in a world-first clinical trial for the treatment of marginal zone lymphoma.
Dr Handunnetti has published in leading journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, and presented at international conferences.
Dr Handunnetti consults in clinic at Ringwood Haematology and provides inpatient care at Ringwood Private Hospital and Knox
Private Hospital. She maintains public hospital appointments, with capacity for service provision including an appointment at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
Dr Handunnetti is fluent in Sinhalese.
