Dr Sylvio Provenzano

Dr Sylvio Provenzano is an exam-qualified Cardiothoracic Surgeon by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). He focuses on cardiac, thoracic and congenital cardiac surgery and is the only practitioner on the Coast using video assisted surgery through a single port to diagnose and treat major lung resections for cancer patients.

Dr Provenzano is one of the first surgeons in Australia to offer the breakthrough Uniportal-VATS procedure for lung resection and other diseases such as mesothelioma, removal of excess fluid, mediastinal and other thoracic tumours.

During a Uniportal-VATS procedure, a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments are inserted into the chest through one small incision and live-stream onto screens to guide the surgeon.

Dr Provenzano was an early adopter of Uniportal-VATS and said his patients had experienced few complications and less pain.

“I have used Uniportal-VATS in over 90 per cent of my thoracic procedures since 2016 and from my experience, supported by the international literature, it’s effective, safe and provides great patient outcomes,” he said.

“The incision is much smaller, which appeals to patients and minimises the risk of infection, resulting in a quick recovery and short hospital stay.”

Over his career, Dr Provenzano has acquired experience in various fields of cardiothoracic surgery: cardiac valve repair, including rheumatic mitral disease and aortic insufficiency; coronary surgery; surgery for endstage heart and lung disease, mechanical support and ECMO; minimal access surgery for aortic valve replacement and congenital defects; thoracic oncology, diseases of the aorta, congenital cardiac surgery and cardiac electrical stimulation.

Dr Provenzano finished his training in Brazil in 1998 and moved to Australia in 2002. He was appointed cardiothoracic surgeon at the Gold Coast University hospital in October 2014, and relocated with his family to the region soon thereafter.
