Dr Viraj Kariyawasam is a Senior Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Head of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.

Viraj  graduated from the University of Colombo in Sri Lanka and migrated to Australia where he completed his gastroenterology training in Sydney. He undertook an IBD fellowship at Guys’ and St Thomas Hospital in London in 2012. In 2020, he was awarded a PhD by the University of Sydney for a thesis on “Immunomodulators in the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease”, evaluating the role of Thiopurines in the treatment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Dr Kariyawasam takes pride in providing high quality comprehensive patient care, which is highly personalised and readily accessible. He is a strong advocate of Open Access endoscopy to suitable patients to improve accessibility.
