Dr Yash Gawarikar is the founder and director of the Canberra Region Neurology and Pain centre. He is the former director of Neurology and Stroke at Calvary Public Hospital. He established the stroke service at Calvary public hospital in 2013 and was director until 2022, he is the VMO at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital.
He graduated in 1999 from the University of Mumbai and then did a further 3 year post graduate degree in Medicine there. He completed his FRACP and neurology training at Newcastle and Canberra. He completed a Stroke Fellowship at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle under Professor Chris Levi and Professor Mark Parsons who are leading World authorities in Stroke. He commenced as a consultant neurologist in Canberra in 2011 and successfully established the Acute Stroke Unit and Service at Calvary public hospital in 2014.
He has been practicing in neurology private practice at Calvary Private since 2012 with expertise in Stroke, Parkinsons/ Movement Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis, Peripheral Neuropathy, Muscle Disorders, Functional Neurological, Dizziness/Vestibular Disorders and Dementia.
Dr Gawarikar is a member of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN), the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the World Stroke Organization (WSO). He is also a member of the Australasian Stroke Trials Network (ASTN) and has a keen interest in acute stroke research and has published in several journals. He is currently the principal investigator at Calvary hospital for several clinical trials. He is also involved in restructuring of acute stroke services in ACT and is Chair of the ACT Stroke Working Group. He is also a committee member of the Stroke Society of Australasia and a former advisor of the Australasian Stroke Academy.
Dr Gawarikar is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in neurology at the Australian National University (ANU) medical school and heavily involved in medical undergraduate, basic physician trainees and neurology advanced training programs and has contributed towards developing curricula and course content at the ANU medical school.
